- 2 ozvodka60 ml
- 1 ozcoffee liqueur30 ml

Instructions
Fill a rocks glass with ice. Pour the vodka over the ice, then add the coffee liqueur. Float the heavy cream on top by pouring it slowly over the back of a bar spoon — the cream should sit in a pale layer on top of the dark coffee liqueur below. The visual contrast is part of the drink's appeal. Stir gently before drinking to combine, or sip through the cream layer for a different experience with each sip.
Sips & Tips
Technique
The cream float is the defining technique — pour it slowly over the back of a bar spoon to keep it sitting on top. The layers will mix as you drink, creating a different experience from the first sip to the last. For a more integrated drink, shake all three ingredients with ice and strain over fresh ice.
Balance
Kahlúa is the classic coffee liqueur, but Mr. Black (an Australian cold-brew coffee liqueur) is a significant upgrade — more coffee-forward and less sweet. Use a quality vodka; the cream and coffee liqueur don't hide a harsh spirit. Heavy cream gives the best texture; half-and-half works but is thinner.
History
The White Russian is a variation of the Black Russian (vodka and coffee liqueur), which was created in 1949 by Belgian bartender Gustave Tops at the Hotel Metropole in Brussels. The cream was added sometime in the 1960s. The drink had a cultural renaissance in 1998 when Jeff Bridges' character 'The Dude' in The Big Lebowski made it his signature drink.
The White Russian is the Dude's drink — and the Dude abides. Simple, satisfying, and genuinely delicious. Cheers.
Variations
Black Russian
Omit the cream. Just 2 oz vodka and 1 oz coffee liqueur over ice. The Black Russian is the original — cleaner, more spirit-forward, and less dessert-like. A great after-dinner drink.
Mudslide
Add ½ oz of Irish cream liqueur (Baileys) alongside the heavy cream. The Irish cream adds a chocolate-vanilla richness that makes this even more of a dessert cocktail. Blend with ice for a frozen version.
