Ingredients

  • 1½ ozscotch whisky
  • ¾ ozamaretto

Instructions

Fill a rocks glass with a large, clear ice cube or a generous handful of ice. Pour the Scotch directly over the ice, followed by the amaretto. Stir gently for 10–15 rotations — just enough to combine and chill without over-diluting. The Godfather is a simple, two-ingredient drink that rewards quality spirits. No garnish needed, though an orange twist adds a pleasant aromatic note if you want one.

Sips & Tips

Technique

The Godfather is one of the simplest cocktails in the canon — two ingredients, built in the glass. The key is the ratio: too much amaretto and it becomes cloying; too little and you lose the almond sweetness that makes the drink interesting. Start at 2:1 (Scotch to amaretto) and adjust to taste. A blended Scotch works well here; the amaretto's sweetness can overwhelm a delicate single malt.

Balance

Use a blended Scotch with some character — Monkey Shoulder or Dewar's 12 are good choices. Disaronno is the classic amaretto; its almond and apricot notes complement Scotch beautifully. The drink is intentionally sweet — if you prefer drier cocktails, reduce the amaretto to ½ oz or add a dash of Angostura bitters to add complexity and cut the sweetness.

History

The Godfather emerged in the 1970s, named after the Francis Ford Coppola film. It's part of a family of two-ingredient spirit-and-liqueur drinks that were popular in that era — the Godmother (vodka and amaretto) and the Godchild (vodka, amaretto, and cream) are close relatives. Simple, satisfying, and endlessly adaptable.

The Godfather is proof that sometimes two ingredients are all you need. Scotch and amaretto — smoke and almonds, peat and sweetness. It just works. Cheers.

Variations

Godmother

Replace the Scotch with vodka. The neutral spirit lets the amaretto's almond and apricot character shine without competition. Use a quality vodka and serve over a large ice cube.

Smoky Godfather

Use an Islay Scotch like Laphroaig instead of blended Scotch. The intense peat and smoke create a dramatic contrast with the sweet amaretto — a more challenging, complex version of the classic.
