- ~30%
Ingredients
- 2 ozblended scotch whisky (monkey shoulder)60 ml
- 1 ozdrambuie30 ml
Instructions
Combine blended scotch and Drambuie in a mixing glass filled with ice. Stir for a full 30 seconds — the Rusty Nail is deceptively simple, and proper dilution is what separates a balanced cocktail from a cloying pour. Strain over a large ice cube in a rocks glass. Express a strip of lemon zest over the surface, twist it to release the citrus oils, and rest it on the drink. The Rusty Nail is a two-ingredient cocktail that punches well above its weight — honeyed, herbal, and warming.
Sips & Tips
Technique
The 30-second stir is critical. Drambuie is intensely sweet and viscous — without enough dilution, the drink becomes syrupy and one-dimensional. The water from stirring opens up the scotch's grain character and lets the herbal notes in the Drambuie (heather honey, saffron, anise) emerge individually rather than as a sweet wall.
Balance
The 2:1 ratio keeps the scotch in the driver's seat while Drambuie provides sweetness and herbal complexity. Monkey Shoulder is ideal — its vanilla and malt notes complement Drambuie without fighting it. Avoid peated scotch here; the smoke overwhelms the honey. If you find it too sweet, try 2.5:1, but don't go below ¾ oz Drambuie or you lose the drink's identity.
History
The Rusty Nail emerged in the 1960s as a favorite of the Rat Pack — Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin were both known to order it. The name's origin is disputed: some say it refers to the rusty nail used to stir the drink in Scottish pubs, others to the color of the cocktail. Drambuie itself dates to 1745, supposedly based on a recipe given to a Scottish clan by Bonnie Prince Charlie.
The Rusty Nail is the ultimate nightcap — two ingredients, no fuss, all warmth. It's a drink that proves simplicity and sophistication aren't mutually exclusive. Cheers.
Variations
Peated Rusty Nail
Replace the blended scotch with a lightly peated single malt like Highland Park 12. Reduce the Drambuie to ¾ oz to let the smoke come through. The peat and honey create a campfire-in-a-glass effect that's perfect for cold nights.
Rusty Nail Highball
Build 1.5 oz scotch and ¾ oz Drambuie over ice in a highball glass, then top with 3 oz chilled soda water. Garnish with a lemon wheel. It's lighter, more refreshing, and surprisingly sessionable for a scotch drink.
