Sips & Tips
Technique
Stir this drink well — the chartreuse is high-proof and needs dilution to integrate with the softer Irish whiskey. About 30 seconds of stirring brings everything into harmony. The orange twist garnish adds a citrus aroma that bridges the herbal chartreuse and the sweet vermouth.
Balance
Use a pot-still Irish whiskey like Redbreast 12 or Powers John's Lane for complexity, or a blended like Jameson for a lighter version. The chartreuse is potent — ½ oz is enough to add its herbal signature without overwhelming the whiskey. Use Carpano Antica or Cocchi Vermouth di Torino for the sweet vermouth.
History
The Tipperary first appeared in Hugo Ensslin's 1916 Recipes for Mixed Drinks. Named after the Irish county (and the famous WWI marching song 'It's a Long Way to Tipperary'), it's one of the few classic cocktails that specifically calls for Irish whiskey. It fell into obscurity but has been revived by bartenders who appreciate its elegant balance.
The Tipperary is the Irish answer to the Manhattan — softer, more herbal, and quietly sophisticated. It deserves a place in every whiskey lover's rotation. Cheers.
Variations
Equal Parts Tipperary
The original 1916 recipe used equal parts (1 oz each) of all three main ingredients. This version is more chartreuse-forward and intensely herbal — try it if you love green chartreuse.
