Ingredients

  • 1 ozdark jamaican rum
  • 1 ozwhite rum
  • 1 ozdemerara rum
  • ¾ ozfresh lime juice
  • ¾ ozfresh grapefruit juice
  • ½ ozhoney syrup

Instructions

Combine all three rums, fresh lime juice, fresh grapefruit juice, and honey syrup in a shaker with ice. Shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds. Open pour (ice and all) into a Collins glass, or strain over crushed ice. Garnish with a mint sprig and a lime wheel. The Navy Grog is a potent tiki classic that blends three rums for maximum complexity — it's deceptively smooth for its strength.

Sips & Tips

Technique

The three-rum blend is what makes this drink special — each rum contributes different flavors. Shake hard to integrate the honey syrup with the citrus. Crushed ice is traditional and provides rapid dilution that tames the high alcohol content. A cone of crushed ice in the center is the classic presentation.

Balance

For the three rums: use Smith & Cross or Appleton Estate for Jamaican funk, Plantation 3 Stars or Banks 5 for white rum, and El Dorado 5 or Hamilton 86 for demerara richness. The grapefruit juice adds a bitter edge that keeps the drink from being too sweet. Use real honey syrup (1:1) for floral complexity.

History

The Navy Grog was created by Don the Beachcomber (Ernest Gantt) in the 1940s, inspired by the British Royal Navy's tradition of issuing rum rations (grog) to sailors. Don's version elevated the concept with multiple rums and fresh citrus. The original recipe was a closely guarded secret, decoded decades later by tiki historians.

The Navy Grog is tiki at its finest — complex, balanced, and dangerously drinkable despite packing three ounces of rum. Approach with respect. Cheers.

Variations

Simplified Navy Grog

Use 2 oz of a single aged rum (like Appleton Estate 8) and 1 oz white rum if you don't have three different rums on hand. It won't have the same complexity but it's still a great drink.
