Sips & Tips
Technique
Fresh nutmeg grated on top is essential — it adds a warm spice aroma that elevates the drink from simple to special. Use a microplane and grate it directly over the glass just before serving. The Angostura bitters add depth and complexity to what could otherwise be a one-dimensional sweet drink.
Balance
Use a quality dark rum like Appleton Estate, Mount Gay Eclipse, or Pusser's. The grenadine should be real pomegranate grenadine — it adds both color and a tart-sweet pomegranate flavor. The lime juice must be fresh; it provides the acidity that keeps the drink from being cloying.
History
Rum Punch is one of the oldest cocktail forms — Caribbean rum punches predate the word 'cocktail' itself. The traditional formula ('one of sour, two of sweet, three of strong, four of weak') dates to the 1600s and was brought to the Caribbean by British sailors. Every island has its own version.
Rum Punch is where cocktail history begins — it's the ancestor of everything we drink today. Simple, satisfying, and endlessly adaptable. Cheers.
Variations
Bajan Rum Punch
The Barbadian version adds a float of falernum and uses Barbadian rum (like Mount Gay). It's spicier and more complex, with the falernum's clove and ginger adding Caribbean warmth.
