Sips & Tips
Technique
This is a built drink — no shaker needed. The key is using very cold sparkling water and plenty of ice. Topo Chico is traditional (its aggressive carbonation is part of the appeal), but any quality sparkling mineral water works. Stir gently to preserve the bubbles.
Balance
Ranch Water has no sweetener by design — it's meant to be bone-dry and thirst-quenching. Use a clean, citrus-forward blanco tequila like Espolòn, Cimarron, or Olmeca Altos. The lime should be fresh-squeezed. If you find it too austere, you're probably used to margaritas — give it a few sips and the simplicity will win you over.
History
Ranch Water originated in West Texas, likely in the Big Bend region, where ranchers and cowboys needed something cold and refreshing in the brutal heat. Topo Chico (a Mexican mineral water from Monterrey) became the mixer of choice. The drink went viral around 2020 and is now one of the most popular tequila drinks in America.
Ranch Water is proof that the best drinks are often the simplest — tequila, lime, bubbles, done. It's the perfect hot-weather drink and the reason Topo Chico is always sold out. Cheers.
Variations
Spicy Ranch Water
Muddle a few slices of jalapeño in the glass before building the drink. The heat pairs perfectly with the tequila and lime, adding a kick that makes it even more refreshing.
