Ingredients

  • 2 ozgin
  • ¾ ozfresh lime juice

Instructions

Combine all ingredients in a shaker with ice. Shake hard for 12 seconds — the Gimlet is a short, concentrated drink and needs proper dilution and chill. Double-strain into a chilled coupe or Nick & Nora glass. Garnish with a thin lime wheel placed on the rim, or a lime twist expressed over the surface.

Sips & Tips

Technique

Fresh lime juice only — the classic recipe calls for Rose's Lime Cordial, but fresh juice and simple syrup produces a far superior drink. The cordial version is sweeter and more one-dimensional; fresh juice gives you brightness and complexity. Double-strain to keep the texture silky.

Balance

The Gimlet is a study in simplicity — three ingredients, and the balance between them is everything. Equal parts lime and syrup (¾ oz each) is the starting point, but taste your lime first. A floral gin like Hendrick's or The Botanist works beautifully here — the cucumber and rose notes amplify the lime's brightness. A bold London Dry like Tanqueray gives you a more assertive, classic version.

History

The Gimlet was born at sea — British naval officers in the 19th century were required to consume lime juice to prevent scurvy, and mixing it with gin made the medicine considerably more palatable. The name likely comes from the small tool used to tap barrels, though some attribute it to Surgeon General Sir Thomas Gimlette who allegedly prescribed the lime-gin mixture to sailors.

The Gimlet is proof that the best cocktails are often the simplest. Three ingredients, perfectly balanced, in a beautiful glass. That's it. Cheers.

Variations

Cucumber Gimlet

Add 4 thin slices of cucumber to the shaker before adding ice. Muddle gently, then add the remaining ingredients and shake. Double-strain to remove the cucumber. Use Hendrick's gin — this variation was practically designed for it.

Basil Gimlet

Add 4–5 fresh basil leaves to the shaker and press gently before adding the other ingredients. The basil adds an herbal, slightly peppery note that works beautifully with a contemporary gin. Garnish with a basil leaf.
