Sips & Tips
Technique
The sugar rim is part of the drink's identity — use fine sugar rather than coarse for a more elegant look. Wet only half the rim if you prefer, so guests can choose whether to sip through the sugar. Double-strain to ensure the drink is perfectly clear and free of ice chips.
Balance
The Lemon Drop lives or dies on the quality of the lemon juice — use fresh, never bottled. The Cointreau adds orange complexity that elevates the drink above a simple vodka sour. A clean, neutral vodka like Ketel One or Grey Goose lets the lemon shine. Adjust the simple syrup to taste — some lemons are more tart than others.
History
The Lemon Drop was created by Norman Jay Hobday at Henry Africa's bar in San Francisco in the 1970s. It became a staple of the 1990s cocktail scene — part of the same wave as the Cosmopolitan and the Appletini. Unlike many drinks from that era, the Lemon Drop has aged well because its core formula — spirit, citrus, sweetener — is fundamentally sound.
The Lemon Drop is a crowd-pleaser that doesn't apologize for it — bright, refreshing, and genuinely delicious when made with fresh juice. Cheers.
Variations
Limoncello Drop
Replace the simple syrup with ½ oz of limoncello. The Italian lemon liqueur adds a more intense, almost candied lemon flavor. Reduce the Cointreau to ¼ oz to keep the drink from becoming too sweet.
Grapefruit Drop
Replace the lemon juice with fresh grapefruit juice and add a pinch of salt. The grapefruit version is more bitter and complex — closer to a Paloma in spirit. Rim with a mix of sugar and salt.
