Ingredients

  • 2 ozbourbon
  • ¼ ozsimple syrup
  • 2 dashesangostura bitters
  • pinchwood chips (for smoking)

Instructions

Build the Old Fashioned as normal: combine syrup and bitters in a rocks glass, add bourbon and a large ice cube, stir. Using a smoking gun or torch with wood chips, fill an inverted glass with smoke, then flip it over the cocktail to trap the smoke. Let it sit 30 seconds. Uncover and garnish with an orange peel.

Sips & Tips

Technique

Cherry or applewood chips give the best flavor for bourbon. Don't over-smoke — 30 seconds is enough. The smoke should enhance, not overwhelm the whiskey.

Balance

The smoke adds a campfire-like dimension that makes a familiar drink feel new. Use a good bourbon with some sweetness (Buffalo Trace, Woodford Reserve) to complement the smokiness.

Mezcal-Smoked Old Fashioned

Use mezcal instead of bourbon for double smoke — from the spirit and the wood chips.
